Tianming Zhou (Alaric) works with what interests him. His work has been shown internationally at festivals and other places.
But in case a more professional bio is needed:
Tianming Zhou (Alaric) works with lens-based media, sound, and installation to explore the in-between of physical and conceptual landscapes. His practice revolves around places, ecological and infrastructural collapse, and the politics of image-making. Coming from a non-fiction background, he approaches his creative process as that of a collector and translator, grounded in fieldwork, interdisciplinary research, and cross-media presentation. His recent works engage with analog film materiality, photochemistry, and cameraless practices to reorient non-conforming sites through site-specific expanded cinema/photography installations.
Tianming’s films have been screened at Antimatter, Mimesis, Interfilm, Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, BISFF, Wuhan Bǎilin, Experiments in Cinema, Non-Syntax, Leiden Shorts, and RPM Festival, among others. His installations have been exhibited at Matsudo Civic Theatre (JP), CICA Museum (KR), Shanghai Mingyuan Art Museum (CN), Deluge Contemporary Art (CA), Durham County Library (US), and elsewhere. He graduated from the University of Hong Kong and Duke University MFA EDA and is an upcoming PhD at the City University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on the intersection of emotional geography, queer ecology, and eco-cinema. He is also a recipient of the North Carolina Arts Council Artist Support Grant and the Interbay Cinema Society Lightpress Grant.
